Community Organizing and Leadership Development Supervisor

    Establishedin 1981, TNDC has grown to employ more than 400 staff, to develop, own, manageand provide supportive services in 43 properties that offer deeply affordablehousing for nearly 5,000 tenants, and to expand its work in communityorganizing and afterschool programming.     Under the direct supervision of the Senior Community OrganizingManager, the Community Organizingand Leadership Supervisor is responsible for overseeingand coordinating the work of the Community Organizing team. The CommunityOrganizing Team consists of two community organizers, a lead organizer, acommunity outreach coordinator, and four part-time community engagementleaders. The Community Organizing andLeadership Supervisor directly supervises the two community organizers and thelead organizer. Duties include developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluatingstrategies to carry out the TNDC Community Organizing Departments mission andvision through base building, popular education, and grassroots leadership development;leading the Community Organizing team in designing and evaluating the CommunityOrganizing Departments leadership development programming and conducting ongoingengagement efforts for alumni of the leadership development program.


    The Community Organizing and Leadership Supervisorcustomarily and regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment in thefollowing job duties:

    Set the strategic direction of the Community Organizing Department in collaboration with the Senior Community Organizing and Planning Manager.
  • S upervise the Community Organizing team and oversee all organizing work. Directly supervise two Community Organizers and one Lead Community Organizer.
  • Oversee the Community Organizing departments Leadership Academy classes.
  • Lead the curriculum design process, developing curriculum for low-income Tenderloin residents that is respectful, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment and evaluation of Leadership Academy programming to identify program outcomes and impacts as well as the strategic needs of grassroots organizers.
  • Lead the process of integrating Leadership Academy participants into the campaign and base-building work of the Community Organizing department.
  • With Community Organizing team, maintain Community Organizing Departments database of Leadership Academy students and alumni.
  • Support and coordinate grassroots community members and Community Organizing Department staff in facilitating workshops, academy classes, and trainings.
  • Provide support for, organize, and participate in regular base-building tasks including outreach, one-on-one meetings with community members, community events, and educational opportunities.
  • Identify and initiate organizing campaigns in support of the Departments goals.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Community Organizing Manager.

    Ability to envision and manage change
  • Ability to supervise staff, including hiring, coaching and evaluation of performance
  • Ability to manage programmatic and administrative operations of the community organizing program
  • Knowledge of popular education and community organizing tools and approaches
  • Knowledge of issues of race and class and how those are embedded in the development of grassroots leadership
  • Familiarity with San Francisco politics
  • Experience and comfort with technology including database management
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills
  • Ability to facilitate meetings.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team structure.
  • Ability to occasionally attend evening meetings and work on weekends


    Four-year college degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience with leadership development, curriculum development, and/or adult education.
  • Two years of organizing or community development experience.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.


    Bilingual and Bi-literate in English and at least one of the following languages:Mandarin/Cantonese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog.
  • Familiarity with the Tenderloin neighborhood.
