We are seeking an organized, compassionate, and community-minded Hospice Volunteer Coordinator to lead and grow our volunteer program.

Position Summary

The Hospice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of the hospice volunteer program. This includes recruiting, screening, training, scheduling, supervising, and recognizing volunteers who provide direct patient support and indirect administrative assistance. The Coordinator works closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure volunteer services meet the needs of patients, families, and the organization while maintaining compliance with all applicable hospice regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Volunteer Recruitment & Program Development

Develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain hospice volunteers from the community.

Conduct volunteer interviews, screenings, and onboarding activities.

Coordinate volunteer orientation, training, and ongoing education programs.

Build partnerships with community organizations, schools, churches, and civic groups to support volunteer engagement.

Maintain an active and diverse volunteer pool to meet patient and organizational needs.

Volunteer Management

Match volunteers with appropriate patient, family, or organizational assignments.

Provide supervision, coaching, support, and performance feedback to volunteers.

Conduct volunteer visits and follow-up contacts to ensure quality service delivery.

Maintain volunteer schedules and coordinate assignments based on patient care plans.

Manage volunteer recognition and appreciation activities.

Address volunteer concerns and make decisions regarding volunteer status when necessary.

Patient & Family Support

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to identify volunteer needs.

Educate patients and families about available volunteer services.

Ensure volunteer activities align with the patient's plan of care.

Communicate changes in patient needs to assigned volunteers as appropriate.

Compliance & Documentation

Maintain complete and accurate volunteer personnel files.

Track volunteer hours and assist with reporting requirements.

Ensure documentation meets regulatory and organizational standards.

Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.

Assist with survey readiness, audits, and plans of correction related to volunteer services.

Team Collaboration

Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and committee activities as assigned.

Serve as the primary liaison between volunteers and hospice staff.

Provide recommendations for program improvements and operational efficiencies.

QualificationsEducation

Bachelor's degree preferred.

Preferred fields of study include Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Marketing, Human Services, Communications, or a related field.

Experience

Minimum one year of experience in volunteer management, program development, community outreach, healthcare, marketing, or a related field preferred.

Hospice, home health, healthcare, nonprofit, or human services experience strongly preferred.

Experience recruiting, training, or managing volunteers is highly desirable.

Required Skills

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong organizational and time-management abilities.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Comfortable speaking to community groups and representing the organization.

Proficiency with computers, electronic documentation systems, Microsoft Office, and virtual communication tools.

Understanding of hospice philosophy and commitment to compassionate end-of-life care.

Licensure & Other Requirements

Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.

Ability to travel throughout assigned service areas.

Ability to pass all required background screenings and pre-employment requirements.

Working Conditions

Combination of office, community, patient home, assisted living, and skilled nursing facility environments.

Regular local travel required.

Occasional evening or weekend community events may be required.

Participation in on-call responsibilities as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, and travel throughout the service area.

Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 25 pounds.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
