Under the supervision of the Clinical Operations Manager, the Milieu Counselor is responsible for managing the milieu through client engagement and crisis intervention, as well as facilitating groups and activities as needed. The Milieu Counselor specifically addresses patients in need of immediate or emergent services.
Key Performance Responsibilities:
- Engage with patients who are struggling or at risk of harm.
- Support the direct care team in addressing patient issues within the community.
- Model appropriate engagement and intervention strategies for direct care staff and in accordance with Newport’s philosophy and treatment model.
- De-escalate struggling patients in the community with an understanding of crisis management techniques to reduce overall incidents and need for manual holds.
- Understand the appropriate use of on-call support as needed.
- Facilitate groups and activities as scheduled and as needed.
- Work with the clinical and program leadership to coordinate evening and weekend treatment services.
- Communicate with patient’s treatment team to ensure continuity of care.
- Complete screening and assessment tools upon meeting criteria or completion of training.
- Be responsible for the timely completion of clinical documentation (progress and group notes).
- Attend weekly clinical supervision and treatment team meetings.
- Attend training as assigned and when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education, Experience, License Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services, counseling, psychology or related clinical field required.
- Enrolled in a master’s program in counseling, social work, or family therapy preferred.
- Licensed as a Therapeutic Recreational Therapist required, if not enrolled in a master’s program.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience with adolescents or young adults in a mental health or substance abuse setting required.
