Friends of Youth Program Assistant

Performs intermediate skilled human support work assisting at-risk youth by matching volunteer mentors with youth, and designing and implementing engaging activities for participants, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Friends of Youth Program Manager.
  • Manages several mentor/youths matches as part of the Friends of Youth program; keeps in close contact with mentor, youth's parent or guardian, and the youth.
  • Performs general office duties, such as filing, creating correspondence, ordering supplies, making, and receiving phone calls, etc.
  • Assists with the recruitment of new volunteer mentors to work with at-risk youths.
  • Develops training materials and assists with the training of new mentors.
  • Assists with screening of potential mentors.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of program group activities which are held throughout the year for program mentors and youths.
  • Assists with public relations efforts for the program; creates monthly newsletter for participants and Advisory Board members.
  • Performs other assigned duties.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of community services and counseling.
  • Thorough knowledge of current social, economic and health problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of child and adolescent behavior and the techniques and means of interviewing, counseling, and investigating problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the programs, laws, and procedures of community service programs in assignment.
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources for social services.
  • Ability to plan, organize, assign, and supervise the work of volunteer mentors.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, draw conclusions and prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, officials, associates, parties to cases and the public.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience in a related fieldor any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Valid drivers license.
