Job Description

Who We Are:

The Springfield City School District, home to The John Legend Theatre, is seeking a Guidance Counselor at Springfield High School for the 2025-2026 school year. We are a nationally ranked Division I District serving approximately 7,500 Pre-K through grade 12 students, in a vibrant learning community of 17 state of the art buildings in west-central Ohio. The Springfield City School District values the racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of our student body, faculty and staff. Our academic and extracurricular aim is to ensure social and emotional learning growth for students with a wealth of opportunity, including a 1:1 initiative and the YouMedia Center, which is a digital learning lab offering students activities such as 3-D printing, graphic design, and videography. As a Guidance Counselor you are required to:

Valid School Counselor Licensure required

Master's Degree in Counseling, Guidance, or Social Work required

Minimum of 3 years of experience in counseling role preferred

Minimum of 1 year of experience in an academic setting preferred

As a Guidance Counselor you will:

Develops and provides monthly whole group (class) lessons to support learning in dealing with relationships, social and emotional strategies, bullying, etc.

Collaborates with teachers/staff to present proactive, prevention-based guidance curriculum lessons

Provides weekly group counseling for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, problem behaviors, or normal developmental tasks

Organizes and develops a daily/weekly schedule to include small group counseling and whole group (class) lessons

Serves students in alignment with social emotional learning (SEL) goals and initiatives

Counsels students with varying needs, challenges, skills, and abilities

Assists chemically dependent and maladjusted students

Facilitates and leads building 504 planning processes in accordance with state and federal laws

Regularly communicates with students, staff, parents, and Principal

Willingly and frequently communicates with building leaders, curriculum coaches, intervention specialists, paraprofessionals, and teachers

Collaboratively supports parent and family outreach efforts

Partners with school nurse(s) and/or District mental health professional(s) as needed

Consults with stakeholders regarding strategies to help students and families

Serves as a consultant about students to educators, parents and community

Provides opportunities for parental conferences to discuss the social, educational and career development of their children

Provides support with the interpretation of cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests, as needed

Analyzes immediate, intermediate, and long-term data related to student academic and behavioral performance to support the design of individual student academic and behavioral programs

Collaborates weekly with Principal to assist with identifying and resolving student issues, needs, and problems

Prepares for and attends RTI, IEP, Mediation, and/or Juvenile Court as needed

Provides insight into the special needs of students and manages information for psychological referrals and possible special placement

Adheres to reporting requirements when made aware of potential concerns and threats to student safety and well-being; follows mandated reporting procedures as needed

Documents student development and progress using district platform(s)

Provides support with the interpretation of cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests, as needed

Serves as student advocate

Trains students as peer mediators, conflict managers, tutors, and mentors

Uses referral sources to address concerns such as suicidal ideation, violence, abuse, depression, anxiety, and family difficulties

Assists students in exploring educational and vocational choices in relation to plans, choices, needs and concerns

Assists with enabling students to receive academic assistance and remediation

Provides crisis intervention

Seeks and engages in professional development

Performs other duties as assigned

What We Offer:

As a contracted employee, Guidance Counselors work 183 days per year and 7.25 hours per day with the possibility of extended days.

Starting salary is $48,715.00 with increases for additional education and experience.
